Long-Term Living

As a BC Babe, you learn that you just can’t sustain an extreme fitness routine forever. But just because you end up back in reality doesn’t mean you have to give up completely on being healthy. You can find a middle ground, one you can live with that doesn’t require banning all bread, undergoing hypnosis, or eating two bags of carrots a day while standing on your head. When we enter into a mode of extreme dieting and fitness, we make short-term changes we can’t possibly stick to, instead of doing the little things each day to change our lives and get into better shape for the long haul. But the little things are far more effective and easy to do. Give some of them a try.

I’ve been on a constant diet for the last two decades. I’ve lost a total of 789 pounds. By all accounts, I should be hanging from a charm bracelet.

Little Changes in Eating Habits

Dealing with the presence of food in your life can be challenging and tiring if you’re trying to watch every morsel you eat. Given that so much of life revolves around food, how can you restrict yourself and still go on living normally? You really can’t. You can, however, safeguard against overdoing it without putting in so much thought and effort that it becomes an obsession. How?

Eat a snack before you go out to dinner or the grocery store. Never enter a major food situation hungry, because you risk going overboard and consuming everything in sight.

Drink hot beverages. Tea can make you feel full, so when you have the urge to eat late at night, try having a cup of tea instead. Drink a hot beverage with your meal as well, because it will fill you up faster.

Don’t ignore the obvious. Eating more good things that are low in fat, such as vegetables, will keep you satisfied. Eat breakfast in the morning and eat small meals throughout the day instead of large ones. By doing so, you keep your blood sugar steady and you crave less junk throughout the day. Try this for two months and see what happens.

Food is like sex: when you abstain, even the worst stuff begins to look good.

Buy less junk. If you don’t have cookies or chips on your countertop, you certainly can’t eat them. If you do buy them, get a smaller bag. The less junk you have around, the easier it will be to resist.

Read the fine print or at least be aware of the sales pitch behind a lot of low-fat, low-carb foods. Just because something says it is good for you does not mean that it really is. In the end, the key to staying in shape is to burn more calories than you consume, regardless of where those calories come from.

Eat small pieces of chocolate or your dessert of choice regularly. Don’t deprive yourself completely of the foods you love because if you do, you’re going to lose it one day and down an entire box of Cadbury bars.
